The theme was Afri-Frans (Afrikaans and French mixture) farm…. 6 months before my wedding I spent 3 months in France…and who does not fall in love with France. I do not like big shiny weddings filled with overly white unnecessary ‘icing’. The theme of our wedding was a feeling. A warm, loving and down to earth feeling, a stylish dream. The accordion player was the cherry on the cake for creating the French atmosphere.

I love all things rustic. In one season of desperate housewives, Susan and Mike got married in the forest underneath a ‘chapel’ made out of branches with a tape recorder playing music and just the priest and her daughter standing there. The focus was on the couple and their pure love and that was the thing I wanted to do …. focus on me and Henco and our love and the things and people we love.

Our invitation was done by Green Wedding. We had a website with all the necessary information on it and the invite was sent out via e-mail. This was very effective because half of the people RSVP’d the same day and it also saves lots of money.

Use people (from the planner to the music makers) who know you and who you can trust. Stick to your budget and save money by doing some things yourself. Brides must try not to get too involved, especially the last month or two. Try to relax and focus on yourself. In my case, everyone involved with the wedding know me very well and and could “see” the pictures I have in my head and could understand if I speak feelings and hand gestures instead of the real object. Because brides NEVER really exactly know what they want …. or is that just me? Know the time line and have deadlines in doing things and keep a file with all the necessary information and payments. Do as much as you can research beforehand. It makes decisions a lot easier. Remember it is YOUR (and you husband-to-be’s) day, not everybody else’s.

I was the first bride my caterer saw dishing up such a big plate of food….it was unforgettably delicious.
